White & Black:
Fringe Arts Bath 2016

As part of the Fringe Arts Bath artists call out, Vicky Vatcher will be curating an exhibition titled White & Black. She presented an open call to artists to submit work purely in monochrome to explore the apparent simplicity through various mediums, to 'make you look twice and think twice.' Vatcher aims to use monochrome to show the viewer different things about a scene, a place, and a point of view.

The work I submitted is a combination of materials, layers and differing shades of white and black. I’m interested in the tones of white that are created when working on a black surface — the shadowy watercolours, the prominent ink, the delicate and subtle fineliner — alongside the difference between working with black on a white surface; sporadic pen marks, carefully considered composition, allowing the white space to almost be a dominating element. Each work layered over another drawing — white on white, black on white — creating another dimension to the work, a contrast between the sensitive drawings and bold, ink expressions to emphasise the qualities of white and black.
